HENDERSONVILLE, NC | FEBRUARY 5, 2020—The City of Hendersonville welcomes one of its newest oldest buildings.  Grey Mill Apartments, located on 4th Avenue just three blocks east of Hendersonville’s historic Main Street, opened for leasing this week.  The newly renovated space, offering 35 studio, one- and two-bedroom apartments, is the only historic industrial building remaining in downtown Hendersonville and is on the National Register of Historic Places. 

The building opened in 1915 as Grey Hosiery Mill, owned and operated by the Grey family for 50 years, during which time they manufactured children’s stockings and women’s nylon hosiery.  The Grey family sold the mill to Holt Hosiery Mills in 1965, and subsequently halted production in 1967.  Since then, the building has served a variety of uses, including short stints as a library and craft store.  After the City purchased the property in 1990, it has largely remained vacant, leaving residents to wonder what would become of this once vibrant space.
